Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine

Chloroquine (CQ) used as prophylaxis for treatment for malaria. Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) less toxic and high insolubility metabolite of chloroquine, and causes fewer side effects. So safer.
More recently, CQ/HCQ has been used to manage conditions such as Covid-19, systemic lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis.  Also used in the treatment of HIV with mixed results.  Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine known for certain coronaviruses, such as SARS-CoV-1 treatments.

    • Nausea with cramps (most common)
    • Anorexia
    • Vomiting
  • Visual disturbances:
    • Irreversible bilateral retinopathy: the key fundoscopic feature is bull’s eye maculopathy and paracentral scotomata 
    • Blurred vision
    • Photophobia
  • Dermatologic
    • Pruritus (most commonly seen in dark-skinned individuals ) [5]
    • Photosensitivity
    • Alopecia
    • Whitening of hair
  • Neurologic
    • Myasthenia-like muscle weakness
    • Sensorineural deafness
    • Tinnitus
    • Cranial nerve palsies
  • Cardiac: can cause sudden death
  • Hematologic: e.g., thrombocytopenia, leukopenia
  • Worsening of preexisting conditions: epilepsy, psoriasis, porphyria, and preexisting retinal damage
